What Is the PMI-ACP Certification?
The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI) — the same organization behind the globally recognized PMP credential. Unlike single-framework certifications, PMI-ACP is deliberately methodology-agnostic: it validates a practitioner’s ability to apply multiple agile approaches, including Scrum, Kanban, Lean, and Extreme Programming (XP), rather than expertise in just one. PMI describes it as the industry’s only agnostic, experience-based, ISO-accredited agile exam, and reports that 86% of PMI-ACP holders say the credential qualified them for new opportunities and 84% say it helped them gain recognition for career advancement.
Who It’s For and Why It Matters
PMI positions the PMI-ACP for practitioners across a range of roles working in agile environments: product owners, Scrum masters, agile team leads, developers, project managers, agile coaches, and product managers. For the events industry specifically, this fits programs where scope and priorities shift quickly and a rigid, waterfall-style project plan does not hold up — tech-heavy conferences, hybrid and digital event builds, and fast-turnaround activations where the organizing team is effectively running short sprints against a fixed event date. Eligibility Requirements
Candidates need all of the following:
- A high school diploma, secondary school certificate, or global equivalent (e.g., GED, GCSEs)
- Agile experience, meeting ONE of these paths:
- 2 years (24 months) of general project experience that includes agile practices, accrued within the last 5 years
- OR a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) program plus 1 year (12 months) of agile experience
- OR an active third-party agile certification (earned more than a year ago) plus 1 year (12 months) of agile experience
- OR an active PMP® certification, which waives the agile experience requirement entirely
- 21 contact hours of training in agile practices, frameworks, and methodologies — satisfied via PMI’s own Authorized PMI-ACP Exam Prep Course, a PMI Authorized Training Partner course, or third-party training
Exam Format & Process
Once an application is approved, candidates pay the certification fee and schedule the exam. Per PMI’s official handbook and certification page:
- 120 multiple-choice questions (100 scored, 20 unscored pretest items that PMI does not disclose)
- 180 minutes (3 hours), including one scheduled 10-minute break
- Four content domains: Mindset 28%, Leadership 25%, Product 19%, Delivery 28%
- Available in English, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish
- Delivered in person at a Pearson VUE testing center or via online proctoring
- Up to 3 attempts allowed within a 1-year eligibility window; failing 3 times requires a 1-year wait before reapplying for the same certification
Cost
PMI does not publish an exact PMI-ACP exam fee on its public marketing pages — pricing depends on PMI membership status and region, and appears once a candidate logs in and begins the application. Multiple independent training-provider sources consistently report a fee of $435 USD for PMI members and $495 USD for non-members, with a $150 USD reexamination fee for second or third attempts. Rescheduling or cancelling within 48 hours of a scheduled exam forfeits the entire fee. Validity & Renewal
PMI-ACP certification is maintained through PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. Holders must earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) within each 3-year certification cycle, through activities such as learning, teaching others, presenting, reading, volunteering, or content creation, and must renew before the cycle ends to keep the certification active.
