If your event calendar includes pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device meetings, there’s a niche credential built specifically for the compliance minefield that comes with them: the HMCC certification, MPI’s Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate, issued by MPI (Meeting Professionals International) through MPI Academy.
A correction up front: our internal tracking listed HMCC as a “Hybrid Meeting/Event Certificate.” Fresh research on MPI’s own site shows that’s not accurate — MPI’s current and historical HMCC program is the Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate, originally developed with the International Medical Meeting Professionals Association (IMMPA). MPI’s catalog doesn’t list a separate hybrid-events credential under this abbreviation, so this guide covers the program exactly as MPI publishes it today.
Designed for medical meeting professionals and the partners, destinations, and venues they work with, the HMCC offers a broad understanding of healthcare-meeting regulatory topics, building competency through case studies, business simulation, discussion, and active exercises. Since 2021, every participant has also received a Credly-hosted digital badge, co-issued with Madison College (Madison Area Technical College, Wisconsin), that verifies the credential online.
Who the HMCC Certification Is For / Why It Matters
- Meeting and event planners who regularly produce pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device meetings, congresses, and advisory boards
- Suppliers and partners — destination management companies, hotels, venues, and production/AV companies — who service healthcare and pharma clients and need working fluency in the rules those clients operate under
- Compliance, medical affairs, and meetings-department staff inside pharma, biotech, and medtech companies who want a third-party-recognized credential
- Anyone building a career in the fast-growing medical-meetings niche who wants MPI-backed proof of compliance knowledge
Healthcare meetings sit inside one of the most heavily regulated corners of the events industry. Planners and suppliers have to juggle event design against a shifting landscape of global compliance rules, cross-border reporting obligations, and strict disclosure requirements — and getting it wrong can create real legal and reputational exposure for pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device sponsors. The HMCC exists to close that knowledge gap for the people planning and supplying those events.
Eligibility Requirements for the HMCC Certification
- No minimum years of experience, degree, or prior certification is published as a prerequisite.
- MPI categorizes the course under its “Emerging Professionals (0-3 years)” education track, though enrollment is open to meeting professionals and suppliers at any experience level.
- Participants simply register and pay for a scheduled session — there’s no application, résumé review, or documentation process (unlike CMP or CSEP).
Course Format & Process
- Format: an intensive, single-session certificate course, not a multiple-choice exam — delivered through case studies, business simulation, discussion, and active exercises.
- Delivery: live-online via MPI Academy on scheduled dates throughout the year, plus periodic in-person or hybrid sessions at industry events such as IMEX.
- Duration: MPI’s own pages aren’t fully consistent here — the general certificate-programs catalog lists 4 clock hours, while the dedicated HMCC program page lists 6 clock hours. Confirm the exact session length when you register.
- Curriculum: cross-border healthcare compliance, global regulations and codes, the U.S. Physician Payments Sunshine Act (Open Payments) reporting and transfer-of-value rules, the EFPIA Disclosure Code, and strategies for producing compliant virtual and hybrid medical meetings.
- On completion: a certificate of completion plus a digital badge, hosted on Credly and co-issued with Madison College, that can be added to email signatures and professional profiles.
